"L’Arlot was the first big estate I worked with in Burgundy. In 1988, when I was just starting my import company, during one of my tastings with Dominique Lafon I asked him what was new and exciting in Burgundy. Of course, I was hoping he would say, ‘Why don’t you import my wines?’ but that would come later. Instead he directed me to a friend of his, Jean Pierre de Smet, who had worked at Domaine Dujac for a number of years and had recently taken over a 14-hectare property named Domaine de l’Arlot. I was intrigued by its style that was more classic with the use of whole clusters. As I still do today, I loved the perfume and elegance of these wines.” —Daniel Johnnes
