"One night in late winter 2009 the super star Bordeaux oenologist was hosting a dinner at restaurant Daniel to launch his Napa Valley project. The room was full and the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc, Syrah and Merlot were decanted and ready to pour. I was surprised to see the meal was starting with a Savennières from the Loire Valley. How does this all fit together? Stephane, who I had met in Burgundy, of all places, several years prior, explained that he was the consultant for this historic estate formerly called Chateau de Chamboureau. They produce Anjou, Savennières and Savennières - La Roche aux Moines of which they own over 3 hectares. Thanks to this serendipitous encounter I followed up with Stephane, re-tasted the wines several times and fell in love (again) with this expression of Chenin Blanc from the Loire.” —Daniel Johnnes
